2 on Tuesday

Has anyone used Instacart yet?  I've seen some ads for it, but hadn't really heard much about it until last week when I friend told me she was obsessed with it and I had to try it.  It didn't take much to convince me, especially when I found out you can shop from Costco on it!  I am assuming the stores vary market to market, but for me in New York, I could order from Costco, Fairway and Whole Foods.  Basically, you can order from all 3 stores in 1 order and then they get delivered.  It was awesome because there are items I love at each store (okay, mainly Fairway and Whole Foods) but there is no way I am going to make trips to both stores to do my grocery shopping.  And since I had access to Costco, I stocked up on some items that won't go bad before I use it or I can freeze.  I now have about 15 pounds of chicken breast in my freezer and 30 rolls of TP stashed all around my apartment (basically where ever I could hid them).  I think it was a success and I'll definitely use it again - although probably not for Costco for a while (I only have so much storage space!).  If you are interested, you can use my referral code and get $10 off your first purchase + free shipping (full disclosure, I also get $5 for referring you).  Click here to check it out!

I have been in my apartment for almost 5 years, which is awesome because moving in NYC sucks.  But it's not good, because moving forces me to clean out my closet's.  And since I haven't moved in almost 5 years... my closet's are starting to overflow.  So, since it's Spring and all (even though it doesn't feel like it outside), I am trying to go through my stuff and get rid of it.  It's not like I'm a hoarder, more that I am just lazy.  So on Sunday, I took 2 full bags of stuff to donate to Goodwill and I still have another full one to bring (and I am guessing at least 2 more since I am only just starting to go through my stuff).  The closest Goodwill is a solid 30 blocks away so I have to take the subway which limits how much stuff I can bring in at once.  Here's to paring down and getting rid of some of the excess stuff in my apartment!

Anyone else doing some spring cleaning?

Training recap week of 3/23 (Pixie Dust Challenge Week 12)

Another week of training done and we are officially 2/3 of the way to the Pixie Dust Challenge! Only 6 weeks to go -  get excited!

This week took a slight down turn in mileage as I was fighting a bit of cold early in the week.  I never got fully sick, thankfully, but it did kill my energy levels.  I didn't do my speedwork on Wednesday and just did an easy run.  Although, won't lie, there was part of me that still wanted to do it, but I knew that it would just delay my recovery.  I was feeling better by the weekend for my long run, so that was good!

Got in a solid amount of cross training and strength workouts, so that was good.

Tink Updates

Yay!  We are only 6 short weeks from the start of Tinker Bell race weekend (or long weeks depending on how you look at it!).  I know I cannot wait for this weekend to come!  So, I thought I would share some Tink items that I've been ruminating on for a while.

1. The Medals

I've been meaning to write a post on this since I came home from Princess.  But time got away from me, so let's do it now (yes, my Princess Half recap is coming... it's about halfway done.  My goal is to finish it this weekend!).  Anyway, on to the shiny stuff.

I love, love, love the 10K and Half medals.  First off, it makes me so happy that the half medal hasn't changed a whole ton since I did this race back in 2012.  I love that spinner so much!  I like the addition of the pearl/silver foil that makes the wings iridescent.  Love!  I am not as big of a fan of the Pixie Dust Challenge Medal.  Don't get me wrong, I like it, I just don't love it like I do the 10K and the Half.  I wish it tied slightly more into the styling of the other medals and included Wings.  I also really like the 5K medal with the Lost Boys on it.  Of course, I forgot to take a picture of it.

2. Tink Dooney & Bourke Bags

The first year I ran Tink, I remember loving the Dooney & Bourke bags.  Unfortunately, I didn't get one that time around (I didn't know about the pre-order and the one I would have wanted was sold out by the time I got to the expo).  I was hoping to rectify that this time around.

They released the designs yesterday and pre-order started.  Of course, the bag style I liked last time (a tote bag) is not included in this years design.

Source: runDisney

Whomp, whomp.  I am also not as in love with the design as I was before (it's cute, but for me, it's not 'can't live without it' and given the price, it has to be 'can't live without it', you know?).

I think the main sticking point (for me) is that it doesn't actually mention the race on it.  It says it's a unique runDisney design and while that may be true, it looks like a Disney bag you could get normally.  Personally, I was hoping it would at least say the race weekend.

Fortunately, my wallet is safe this time around (okay, more money to spend at the expo on other items)!  Although, I reserve the right to change my mind at anytime on this point.

3. Costumes

Of course, what is a runDisney race without the costumes!  I am starting to work on mine and will share once they are finalized.  I've got 3 to plan this time around (5K, 10K and Half).  Again, I'm trying to keep it simple (no sewing or cutting apart shirts for me... again).  And given the theme of race, I am thinking one costume will be a fairy (I mean, I gotta, right?).  So here are today's question for you all...

Have you ever run in wings before?  Sparkle Athletic has some, but I am worried about actually running in them.  I see a lot of people wearing them, but don't actually know if they are comfortable.

If you've run them before, please let me know how it went!

Since they aren't finalized, I'm still taking costume suggestions.  Share your favorite costumes with me!

2 on Tuesday

If you follow me on Instagram, you'll know that I chopped my hair off this weekend.  It was relatively spontaneous.  I had a haircut scheduled, but was planning on just getting a trim.  But towards the end of the week, my long hair started driving me nuts.  So, come Saturday morning, I decided to cut it off.  While I've had my hair long for a while now, I am no stranger to short hair.  I did this a couple of years ago and knew when I was ready to cut it this time, I'd do it in one cut and donate it.  I don't get really attached to my hair or upset when I cut it, so it's not a huge deal for me.  I am going to be donating the 10" to Pantene's Beautiful Lengths program.   I'm loving the bob so far (so light for Spring!) and it is so much easier to do in the AM!  Has seriously cut my hair time in the mornings by 15 minutes.

I bought 21 Day Fix from Beachbody (the people who do P90X) last year and only followed it occasionally.  It's a pretty simple program - 21 days of 30 minute workouts plus a portion control meal plan.  I'm not sure why I never really followed it through (guess I just wasn't in the right mindset yet).  As you know from my March goals, I want to lose a couple of pounds.  I am easing myself into it and have been following the meal plan portion for a couple of weeks now.

The great part about it is there is no calorie counting - you are allotted a certain number of each container (based on your goal) and then you just eat that number of containers.  They may look small, but looks are deceiving in this case and they hold a lot of food!  I'm going to start adding in the workouts as well this week.  I haven't decided if I am going to do them everyday or start with a couple of days as cross training.  Either way, I am trying to take it one day at a time.  Bathing suit season is coming up!

Training recap week of 3/16 (Pixie Dust Challenge Week 11)

Another week of training in the books! This past week was a busy one (hence the lack of posts) between work, training and going home for my niece's birthday.  It was a great time, but when all combined, a crazy week!

I also must have jinxed myself with the weather because after the nice weather the week before, it turned cold again and has been in the 30's!  And to top it all of we got 3 inches of snow on Friday.  Happy first day of Spring, right?  I am definitely ready for some more moderate temperatures!

I didn't do as great with cross training this week, only getting 3 days in.  But, I did get a nice set of progression runs in.  My legs were definitely feeling it by Day 3 so I need to make sure to keep doing these heading into Tinker Bell.  Only 7 weeks to go!

Training recap week of 3/9 (Pixie Dust Challenge Week 10)

Another week has come and gone!  The weather finally seems to be turning - thank god!  It was so nice on Wednesday for my speed work - it made me so happy!  I am keeping my fingers crossed that it stays like this.

I also completed week 2 of the Yoga Shred Challenge.  Short workouts for 14 days were a good way to ease back into Yoga.  I still don't love Yoga enough that I could see myself doing it all the time, but if I could get a couple in every now and then I think that would really help my flexibility.

Monday
Scheduled: Rest
Actual: Rest
Cross Training: Yoga Shred Day 8

Tuesday
Scheduled: 4 miles easy
Actual: 4.05, 39:18, 9:43 pace
Cross Training: Yoga Shred Day 9

Wednesday
Scheduled: Speedwork - 3 miles at Half Marathon Race Pace
Total miles: 5.89
Paces: 8:15, 8:01, 7:51
Cross Training: Yoga Shred Day 10

I honestly wasn't sure what this pace should be.  To PR my pace needs to be about an 8:20 so I figured lets see how that feels.  My legs were feeling great and the paces were strong.  Not sure if I could hold those for a half right now, but nice to see what my legs are capable of right now.

Thursday
Scheduled: 4 miles easy
Actual: 2.75 26:48, 9:45 pace
Cross Training: Yoga Shred Day 11

I had a work event on Thursday night so I had to do this run in the AM.  I (of course) did not get up early enough to get all 4 miles in.  2.75 is better then nothing though!  And I still did my Yoga Shred workout.

Friday
Scheduled: Rest
Actual: Rest
Cross Training: Yoga Shred Day 12

Saturday
Scheduled: 6 miles long run
Actual: 6.00 mi, 56:23, 9:24
Cross Training: Yoga Shred Day 13

Sunday
Scheduled: 2-3 miles easy
Actual: 2.89 mi
Cross Training: Yoga Shred Day 14

I was cheering for the NYC Half Marathon and jumped in with Abby for some miles in the park.  I looked afterwards and roughly calculated the 2.89 mi.

March Goals

In addition to my goals for the full year, I've been trying to set monthly mini-goals as well.  These may be goals that help me reach my long term goal or just some short term ones I want to accomplish.  I never got around to sharing January or February's goals - and I'm already late on March... but better late then never right?

Run 100 miles
This is one of those goals that goes towards a long term goal (1,250 for the year).  This one basically needs no explanation.  Run.  100 miles total.  Easy, peasy, right?

Complete the 14 Day Yoga Shred Challenge
As I mentioned in this week's training recap, I've been doing the 14 Day Yoga Shred Challenge on doyouyoga.com.  I don't love yoga (it's so slow moving normally), but I really like this instructor.  They are short (about 10 minutes each), but still challenging for me (especially since I'm not great at yoga).

Do core work 4x/week
This goes as part of my cross training annual goal.  I've been doing pretty good with cross training (with only a couple of misses) and want to keep it going!  Bathing suit season will be here before we know it.

Lose those extra "winter" pounds
I'm sure I'm not alone in this, but I always put on a couple of pounds of the winter.  The combination of the cold weather, running off season and lots of comfort food, does not bode well for my waistline.  I honestly don't have a lot of weight I want to lose (it's less then 5 pounds), but I'd still like to drop them as we head into spring/summer.

Do my taxes
I think this one is pretty self explanatory as the federal government requires it.  I definitely do not want to be doing them in April (which I've done in the past and do not want to do again).

What are your goals for the month?

2 on Tuesday

Just a quick update on my 50 States Challenge - I signed up for state #23 (and 5th for the year) this past week.  I'm doing the Shipyard Old Port Half Marathon in Portland, Maine in July.  I'm really excited to check Maine off the list and it's sponsored by a brewery - you know I'm a fan of that!  Anyone ever done it before?  If so, I want the details!

Is anyone watching the new show 'Secrets and Lies'?  I watched the first two episodes, but I am unsure how I feel about it.  Episode 3 is DVR'd, but I'm not 100% sold on it.  And, what is up with Juliette Lewis' expression?  She just stares the whole time.  Is it me or is that odd?  Anyone watching it?  Thoughts?

Training recap week of 3/2 (Pixie Dust Challenge Week 9)

This week makes the half way point of Tink training - only 9 weeks to go!  I have a couple of races before then (Hot Chocolate 15K and RnR Raleigh Half), but I am focusing on my training on Tink.  While I was definitely prepared for Glass Slipper Challenge, I wasn't as prepared as I could have been.  I honestly didn't do a lot of back to back build runs (short run day 1, long run day 2) but did the opposite (long day 1, short day 2).  While I had plenty of miles, GSC really wiped me out.  I'm also doing the 5K at Tink Weekend and factoring in a cross country flight... it could really wipe me out.  And I definitely don't want that to happen.

I do pace leading for Team in Training which is a main reason I did my long runs on Day 1.  I love leading those folks and it's always better to have people to run with in the winter (and especially this winter!).  But fortunately, this past Saturday was our last practice - their race is this upcoming weekend.  Now that it is over, I'll be able to do better about my progression runs.  I'm also going to be adding a 3rd day in occasionally to simulate the 5K.

This week, I did something different with cross training.  I'm doing the 14 Day Yoga Shred Challenge on doyouyoga.com.  It's only 10 minutes a day with a different focus each day (arms, abs, etc).  I am not a huge yoga person, but it's not typical yoga and halfway through, I'm really liking it.  It's a nice change up and does challenge me.

Race recap: Enchanted 10K

Enchanted 10K
February 21, 2015

As is the norm for runDisney races, the day started very early!  We went to bed early, but man, that 3am alarm still comes quickly.

I had set my outfit out the night before, so getting dressed half asleep was at least was easy!  Earlier in the month, Karen had hosted a giveaway for Princess themed running tops and I won!  Yay - I never win anything, so I was excited to start with and these were Princess running tops - so double yay!  I picked out an Elsa one with the sole purpose of wearing it this weekend!

Luckily my sister-in-law is a good sport and agreed to be the Anna to my Elsa!

My original plan was to wear shorts under my Sparkle Athletic skirt, but when the real Queen Elsa dropped a cold freeze over Orlando, I changed it to capri's.  And added some gloves.  And they were both really needed - it was cold waiting around!

We headed to the bus around 4 and were able to get right on.  There little traffic on the way and we were quickly at Epcot.  Personally, given how cold it was, I would have killed for a little traffic and more time on the bus!

After arriving, we met up with Abby and all hung out until it was time to to the corrals (basically trying to stay warm).  Given the cold, they had actually brought out some stand up heaters for people to stand by and warm up.  Really smart decision and people definitely took advantage!  We weren't able to get near one until people started heading to the corrals.  At least we got a little time with them.

Pretty soon it was time to head to the corrals!  I was in Corral A, but this was my sister-in-law's (Mary's) first race ever and I wanted to run it with her so I dropped back to Corral D.  I was happy to do it, but it was a little chilly waiting for the start.  I had brought a heatsheet from home so Mary and I huddled under it while we waited.  We had both also brought a throwaway shirt, which helped, but we were still popsicles by the time it started!

The corrals were starting about in 10 minute increments.  Even though it felt like forever, eventually it was our turn!  Off we went - with frozen fingers and toes!  It took me about 2 miles to feel all my toes again, but I did start to warm up as we ran.

I let Mary take the lead in if she wanted to take any pictures.  She elected to skip the pictures if they had a line (it was too cold to stand around!).  I also didn't take any pictures before or along the way as my fingers were frozen.

Right after the started, they had Anna and Elsa on the overpass talking to everyone.  It was really cute and they were making it snow!

We also saw the White Rabbit as well as Tinker Bell and Periwinkle.  I would have loved to have stopped for Tink because I haven't seen her in a race yet, but the line was crazy long and there was no way I was stopping in that cold!  Hopefully at Tink in May she'll be out again!

It was a little crowded on the course so we had to do a bit work passing people so we could have some running room.  By the time we hit mile 3, we had warmed up and had ditched the throwaway shirts (I ended up keeping the gloves on because they matched - and my fingers were still a little cold).

Pretty soon we were heading into Epcot.  This part of the race is my favorite, I love going around World Showcase.  Mary and I stopped to take a selfie with Spaceship Earth in the background.  Gotta stop for a photo in Epcot!

My selfie skills need work - Spaceship Earth isn't even visible!
From there, we finished the loop of World Showcase and headed out to the Boardwalk portion.  Mary was doing great and feeling great!  We took a couple of walk breaks, but not too many.  Mary was a rock star!

Along this stretch, we saw Queen Minnie (with a crazy long line) and Baseball Donald.  Before we knew it, we were heading back into Epcot.  They changed the course slightly in Future World (the start line was in a different place as well) and along this stretch they had out astronaut Goofy.

From there we headed past Spaceship Earth and headed towards the finish.  It was so great to finish with Mary - I was excited for her.  She had worked really hard training for this and it was awesome to be with her when she crossed that finish line!

After we took some official finisher photos, I checked in for the Glass Slipper Challenge (which literally consisted of just walking through a tent - anyone else think it was weird?) and we picked up our snack boxes.

After picking up our bags, Mary and I celebrated with some beer while we waited for my mom to finish.  She also had been training hard and she did it (she's a walker)!  So proud of her as well!

While waiting we also took a picture together in front of the adorable Princess background.  Anna and Elsa for the win!

Another great runDisney race in the books!  I had so much fun running with Mary and I love this course.  Wish it had been a little warmer, but what can you do?

Princess Half 2015 - Expo Goodies!

As with all runDisney races, our weekend started with a trip to the expo!  After checking in at the hotel and leaving our bags with storage, we headed to ESPN's WWOS.  Luckily, we didn't have to wait long for a bus and off we went!

Upon arrival at the expo, they had large signs out front for all the races.  I stopped to take a picture in front of the Glass Slipper Challenge one!

And of course, upon arrival, Mary (my sister-in-law) and I stopped for (my) traditional beer.  They had really cute pink cups this year.  I swear I took a photo of the cup at WWOS, but I can't find it for the life of me.

We headed into the HP Field House first to get our numbers.  We did my number first since the Glass Slipper Challenge was separate from the 10K and Half numbers.  After picking my number up, we made our way around to the GSC pictures.  New this year we had to stop for a photo with our number at pick up (and then they reviewed the picture after the half to get your GSC medal).  There was no line and I was in and out in a few minutes!

I also always pre-order the pins (they are a must for me, so it's worth it to pre-order so I don't have to stress about them).  I have to say, I really loved the pins this year!

From there we headed back down to the first level to get Mary and my mom's numbers for the 10K and my shirts.  But before we headed down, we stopped at the runDisney instagram booth.  All you had to do was show you follow runDisney and you could take a cute photo in front of their green screen.

Is it me or does my head look oddly larger then my body?
From there we headed to the ground floor.  This was Mary's first 10K, so had to document her first number pickup!

After they picked up their numbers, I picked up my race shirts.  I really like the designs this year!  So cute - particularly the 10K one!

The merchandise on this side was pretty picked over.  All the good stuff had already been moved to the Jostens Center.  But they did have some characters out for photo's which was nice!  We stopped for a photo with Queen Minnie.  The line was only about 10 minutes which was good, because she was out during the 10K and the line was easily 30 minutes!  Glad we stopped at the expo!
My mom bought us tiara's to wear; I think I was made to wear tiara's

After our picture with Minnie, we headed to the Jostens Center.  They had the red carpet rolled out again and we stopped for a photo with the Footmen!  I love how do up this race, it's just so fun!

The Field House wasn't too crowded.  We made our way to the 10K shirt pickup and into official merchandise.  Already, the gear was pretty picked over.  From the preview, I wasn't in love with much, so this wasn't an issue for me!  And even in person, I wasn't in love with the designs, so really not an issue.  I didn't see the tumbler cups which I had liked, so saved some money there.

I was pretty good and only picked up a couple of items.  First, I did pick up a 19.3 Mickey magnet - not because I needed another magnet, but because I loved the color!  Looks great on my fridge!

I also got my new standard - the mini medal pin.  I don't know why I started collecting these, but these are apparently my new thing.  I have a {small} craft project idea to do with them (don't get impressed, it's nothing big or hard) so I'll share once I do.

And lastly, my always traditional Sweaty Bands!  Abby actually picked these up for me the day before when she was at the expo which was good since they had sold out before I got there (at least these ones had).

My mom picked up 'I Did It' shirts for the 10K for herself and Mary and then we headed out to the rest of the expo.  Back in January they had regular runDisney Mickey magnets that said the distances on them (6.2, 13.1, 19.3, etc).  I had picked up a 6.2 one to give to Mary after her race and I was glad I did because they were all sold out at this expo!  You're first race ever desires proper documentation :)

We didn't spend a ton of time in the rest of the expo.  Stopped by the runDisney booth to look at the newly released Tinker Bell medals (I'll share those photo's in a separate post with my thoughts on them) and stopped by Sparkle Athletic to pick up my skirt for Saturday.  But then we headed out - we were itching to get to the park (plus we were hungry!).

What did anyone else get at the expo?

Training recap week of 2/23 (Pixie Dust Challenge Week 8)

Skipping 2 on Tuesday this week to get caught up on recaps!  This week did not go as planned.  I came back from Princess completely wiped - struggled to get through my run on Wednesday.  I cut the run short because I was just completely exhausted.  And Thursday, I had a work event that prevented me from doing my run.  I made up some of my miles over the weekend, but it was definitely a down week.

I also didn't get any cross training workouts in, but will do better this week!

Training recap week of 2/16 (Pixie Dust Challenge Week 7)

Hello!  I'm alive!  Sorry for the bit of radio silence, just needed to recover from Princess Weekend.  We had so much fun (lots of post recaps coming!) but I definitely came back exhausted and needed some time to recover.  This puts me 2 training recaps behind, so let's get those out of the way first.

This week was pretty good.  I missed a run because I was behind in packing for Florida, but got my 4 days of cross training in!
