Mid-Year Check In

Sooooo.... a solid 5 month break without a post. Ugh. I am so not doing good about getting back into the swing of regular blogging.

I really have no excuse for not blogging February and March; I was around and has time. I cannot say the same for April through June. It was non stop travel during those time periods. I took 12 trips between mid-April to the end of June! There was one portion that involved 12 (one way) flights during a 38 day period. Ooof. It was a lot.

Some of it was planned, but most was not. I had some work travel come up that was unexpected and some family stuff going on. My grandfather has not been doing well, so I ended up going last minute to Chicago for Easter (which I am so glad I did). Sadly, he passed away at the beginning of June (one of the unexpected trips).

But now, things should (or better be!) calming down. I don't have many trips planned until Labor Day except a weekend trip to PA to sit by the pool. That one I can handle. 😀

Since it is the middle of 2017 already (am I the only one who has no idea how that happened???), let's take a quick check in on my 2017 goals. You can see my original post for more details on each item.

  1. Run 1,270 miles in 2017. I am right on track with this one! As of 6/30, I had run 642.55 miles. Slightly ahead of 50%!
  2. Tackle 5 states in 2017. Sadly, it doesn't look like 5 will happen this year. I have 3 planned, but don't think it will be possible to get 2 additional ones done.
  3. Run 2 marathons. This is most likely not going to happen. I made the decision to not run a spring marathon - and it was definitely the right decision for me. My body was not ready to jump that headfirst into training and I know its better for me to listen to my body.
  4. And the big one - qualify for the Boston Marathon. This is still on my list, but I'm being realistic that it might not happen this year. It is taking me longer than I would like to get my speed back and I need to be honest about where I am. I will one day qualify!
This is also probably a good time to update you on my fall marathon plans. If you remember from this original post, I had planned to run Chicago (I had a time based guaranteed entry). Well, one of my best friends got engaged (yay!) and asked me to be in her wedding (of course!), but the wedding is on the same weekend of Chicago. So no Chicago this year. Instead, I am going to be running the Wineglass Marathon in Corning, NY.

And now for some other goals (blog-wise and life wise):
  1. Get back to blogging regularly. Clearly, I failed at this one. Hopefully I can get better in the second half.
  2. Work on eating clean as much as possible. I am doing okay on this one. I have good days and bad days, but trying to be better at it.
  3. Cross train more often. I've done pretty good here too. I've been trying new workouts to find some additional ones I like and can add into the rotation. I did PureBarre in the beginning of the year (not my favorite) and discovered Barry's Bootcamp (love!).
  4. Travel more. I am definitely exceeding this one. I probably traveled a bit too much this past spring.
  5. Downsize my stuff. I have done pretty good one this. I've already taken several large bags of stuff to good will and have more in my apartment waiting to go. I need to be a little more strict on my "1 in, 2 out" policy, but I'm trying and that's all I can really do!
So this was just a little bit of an update on what I've been doing. Looking forward to getting back to a regular routine; not just in blogging, but in my normal life. So much travel makes it hard to get into any kind of regular routine.

I'll be back soon this week with a training recap - I'm just finished week 6 of Wineglass Training!

Checking in - April

Dude, I am rapidly becoming the king of not keeping blog promises! In my last check in (almost a month ago... how did that happen?), I promised to post something (at least I didn't promise to post anything on a schedule), but nothing went was posted.

So, let's see whats been going on in April. The month begin with a weekend trip to Philly to run the Hot Chocolate 15K with Kasey. This race is really fun, except the weather didn't cooperate and it was a bit chilly (and wetter) then I would have liked. Full race recap to come!

#willrunforchocolate

Two weeks later, it was time to head down to Disney for the Star Wars Dark Side Half Marathon weekend. I love me some Star Wars and this weekend was a blast! I'll have race recaps to come and more about our trip, but it was so much fun. In true runDisney spirit, there were definitely some things that need to be fixed for future years, but otherwise, I still had a great time.

Best beer cup yet!

Weekend was great, came home... and then it happened. Something I honestly think (knew) was bound to happen.  I got sick. And not like a minor sniffles and cough. Full. Blown. Sick.

I don't exactly know what is was as I didn't ever go to a doctor (yes, I am aware I probably should have). It started on Tuesday. My throat my scratchy and my head was swimming. I went home from work a little early and worked from home the rest of the day. I took my temp before bed and it was almost 102 degrees. I still had a slight fever on Wednesday (99 degrees) so I worked from home. Made it back into work on Thursday - but only for about half a day. I could barely speak and my boss sent me home. And then I worked again from home on Friday. By Friday, my throat was so raw from coughing, that every cough almost had me in tears. It was not pretty. I was not pleasant. Thankfully, I live alone and could be as unpleasant as I wanted and no one cared. I felt a little better on Saturday, but was exhausted. I basically slept the entire day.

Sunday was the best I had felt in almost a week, but not 100%. Was able to go to the grocery store and even do some meal prep for the week. I am finally feeling better (thank god), but am trying to take it easy this week as I do not want a relapse. I also feel like I am starting from scratch with running as I didn't do anything for almost 10 days. So taking it easy and starting slow.

So, that's where I've been the last month.  Outside of being sick, it was a pretty good month full of friends, races and Disney.  What more could I ask for?

How was your April? Do anything fun?

Hello

Hi. It's me. Again. I have been a seriously bad blogger and have managed to not post anything since the middle of November. I wish I could say I had a great reason for it ("I won the lottery and have been traveling the world" or something equally as fun).

But I do not.

Post marathon (which, went amazing - new PR at 3:42 - more to come on that later), things were busy.  First there was Thanksgiving and then it was December, a notoriously busy time at work. The blog just took a backseat to life. I kept telling myself I'd write tomorrow and tomorrow never came. Christmas came next and let's just say... it wasn't exactly my favorite one. A dear family friend (who has always been an aunt to me) passed away unexpectantly right before Christmas, so there was definitely a little sadness in the air. Plus, I've had some personal stuff going on and I needed to focus on me for a bit.

Time kept passing and as it did, it got harder and harder to start typing again. I genuinely love blogging - it allows me to flex my creative muscle and I enjoy it. So now, it's spring. Winter has finally ended and I feel like I am {finally} coming out of whatever shell I was hibernating in. Time to start blogging again.

My goal is to start slowly. I am not going have a goal for a certain number of posts a week or anything like that.  I am going to prioritize getting all my outstanding race recaps up. The races may have happened a while ago, but I want to have it all down on paper for memory sake. And hopefully share some other posts about life, food, whatever is going on. Just going to start slowly and take it one post at a time.

So that's where I've been.  What's new with you?

Training recap week of 9/7 and 9/14 (Route 66 Week 8 & 9)

I went to write this week's recap and realized I hadn't posted the last two weeks training recaps.  Just been a couple of those weeks at work (in a good way!).  I expected that getting settled into work would disrupt blogging, so I am not surprised.  I figure I'll get caught up today on the previous two weeks and then do last weeks tomorrow (or Wednesday).

Week 8

This week was not great; I was feeling really stiff and a bit in pain (mainly in my shins). This happened when I was training for Grandma's too. I don't seem to do too well with total mileage in the 40's.  I scaled back some runs this week to let my body recover a bit.

Life Lately

Hello.

Remember me?  You know, the person who writes this blog?  I am sorry for the break, I honestly did not mean for it to go on for over a month, but once it started, it got harder to get back into it each day it went on (so basically this post is going to be rough, but I hope you stick around).

I don't know what spurred the (needed) break from the blog, but I think so of it came from a little bit of post TinkerBell blues.  I had been looking forward to the race weekend probably a little more then most people.  It basically kept me from going crazy during the long and cold winter here.  The trip was amazing (I am still going to do the race recaps) and so much fun it should probably be illegal.  So, I think it makes sense I came back with a little post-trip blues.  And I was also not feeling running at the time (more on that below), plus was crazy at work (in a good way).  So basically, I was probably due for a break.

Whatever the reason, it happened, so we'll just jump back in.  A lot happened in the last month-ish, so I'm going to do a bit of a life lately recap this today and ease myself back into posting regularly again.  I write this blog for fun, so definitely not planning on stressing myself out about it.  This post will be a quick recap and then I'll do some more regular posts.  I'm likely going to jump around in my posts (vs. going chronologically) based on what I feel like writing that day.

Running

Like I alluded to above, me and running have changed our relationship status to "it's complicated" lately.  If you've been reading this blog at all, you know I love running and usually have no problem getting all my runs in.  But post Tink, runs were just painful.  I keep doing them, but the paces were all over the place and even slow efforts seemed herculean to me.

But I had races on the calendar (for two states - Wisconsin and Washington - that I was not missing since everything was paid for) so I knew I couldn't take a break.  But I did give myself permission to skip runs or cut them short if I really didn't feel into it.  The strange thing was, during both the races I ran, I felt great.  And after the first, I was like, awesome, it's over, back to normal and went out for my first run.  But, it was not over.  It was miserable.

So now, both races are over (race recaps to come), I am full on giving myself a running break.  I have run only twice since Seattle and it was has been a nice change.  I still miss running, but I think I was getting a little burnt out and since marathon training doesn't start until the mid-end of July, I have some time to relax.  I have a half on July 13th, so I won't be taking forever off, but plan on taking a few more days and then easing into it, depending on how I feel.

I am not going to go back and do weekly recaps for the past few weeks - mainly because I wasn't running a lot, so there isn't much to say except for recapping what I said above.

Travel

I've been busy otherwise these past few weeks though with lots of other travel!  Probably a little too busy, if I am honest.  I've been pretty go, go, go since the end of April.  Since we last spoke, I went to Madison for a visit with my cousin and to do the half, Delaware for a baby shower and Seattle to visit another friend and run the RnR Seattle Half.

Madison was a blast.  We had mostly good weather (it rained on Sunday, but was otherwise it was beautiful).  We had a lot of cheese, ice cream and good food.  And of course, drank a ton of beer!  It was really nice to spend a relaxing weekend with family - we got a lot done, but also made sure to have some downtime.

My trip to Delaware was short - but it was so nice!  We have very good family friends who we call Aunt and Uncle and their kids are our "cousins" and it was one of the girls baby shower.  It's been a while since I've seen her (so lives in Cali on the Oregon border) so it was really nice to catch up.

And lastly, Seattle.  I had never been to Seattle before, but long felt like it was my soul city.  Don't ask me why, I just did.  And this trip did nothing to change that feeling.  I just loved it.  It was wonderful to spend time with Megan before she leaves the main land and moves to Hawaii (don't worry, I am already claiming a spot in her guest room for visits!).  And let me tell you - Seattle is gorgeous.  We had the most amazing time.  I'll probably do a whole post just on what we did in Seattle, but it was the perfect combination of running, touristy things and good food.  I had put the word out to my fellow Oiselle Flock members for recommendations about what to do while there.  And they did not disappoint!

PiYo

Since I haven't doing much running, I figured this would be a good time to focus on cross training.  And it has been!  I started doing PiYo again and am consistently following the schedule right now.  I am just finishing week 4 (out of 8) and it's been great.  I think it's been helpful to have something to do that's not running, but I know will help my running (if that makes sense).  My 8 weeks will finish right around the time I'm scheduled start marathon training so that works out perfectly.

Nutrition

As one can imagine, all this constant travel has not been good for my eating habits.  I haven't really put on any weight - maybe 1 pound or so, but its more that I am just feeling crappy.  So I'm using this time to also really focus on my nutrition and getting it inline for when training starts.  I've been trying to cook a lot and bring lunch so I know I'm getting healthy food and the right balance of calories.

I won't lie - I debated doing a Whole30 program.  But I thought about my experiment with paleo and knew in the long run, it wouldn't work for me.  So, I decided not too.  I am incorporating some portions of it to see how my body feels without the food.  Basically trying to curb my added sugar intake, wheat and dairy (which I already know makes me feel iffy).  I'm also cutting out soy, which I am especially interested to see what happens there.  I've been reading up on soy consumption and how your body reacts to it and I'm wondering if that could be some of my problems.  I only cut it out as of Sunday, so who knows.  We'll see how it goes.

Movies
I've gotten to the movies a bunch in the last month or so.  I've seen Pitch Perfect 2 (aca-amazing!), Tomorrowland (I liked it a lot, but I am also a Disney freak) and Avengers 2 (not as good as the original, but I still loved it) in the theatre.  Plus 2 cross country flights means lots of movie time as well.  Between those flights, I watched Imitation Game, Snowpiercer, Lucy and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

That's all I can think of right now (mainly because to cover everything would mean this post would basically not ever be done).  I am going to try and get back into posting regularly.  Thanks for sticking with me!

Training recap week of 6/24 and 7/1 (DLH / DDD Week 9 & 10)

Hello again.  I'm back.  Me who said I would post during my vacation and then did not.  Oops.  I thought about it every day, but then I would put my computer away (if I even got it out) and go back to hanging with the family.

The time off was nice.  It was nice to disconnect, spend time with family and do some thinking.  It was just so enjoyable.  The weddings were fun and I came back so relaxed - until I landed at LGA and discovered my baggage did not make the journey back with me.  So there goes my relaxed mood.  It's been 36 hours and I still have not received my bag.  I am so annoyed.  That bag contains both pairs of my running shoes (is it sad that I am most annoyed about that fact?).  Keep your fingers crossed that it shows up.  Just a word of advice - don't fly American.  Ugh.

So anyways, I clearly missed last weeks training recap, so I am going to do both Week 9 and 10 today (sorry in advance for the long post).  Week 9 marked the half way point of my training program.  Holy cow.  I can't believe it is already halfway done (over halfway now).  It feels like it was just starting.

Sorry...

So sorry for the little unexpected break.  I had some posts planned for this week, but work got the better of me.  I am leaving earlier tomorrow morning for a week vacation (!) and really should be packing, but wanted to stop by and say hi (in other words procrastinate for bit since I hate packing).

Hope you all had a great week and I'll be back next week with more 'regularly scheduled' posts.  Now off to pack some more (or find other ways to procrastinate).

Have a good weekend!

Happy (belated) National Running Day (and why is New York trying to kill my spirit?)

So, I am a bad running blogger.  And a bad runner.  Not only did I not post on National Running Day, I didn't even go for a run.  I did go have dinner and drinks with a running friend - that counts, right?

I love National Running Day and think it's a great idea.  Was totally going to write a post but was busy at work and then exhausted when I got home from dinner.  Oops.  It happens.

I decided not to run (I did think about it) because Wednesday is my rest day and given how intense my schedule is, I didn't think it was prudent (SAT word - 10 points!) to add in a 7th day of running this week.  Plus after my speedwork on Tuesday night, I really needed the day off.

On a totally different side note (i.e. the second part of the post title), sometimes I think NYC is trying to kill my spirit.  I am seriously.  Like tonight, I was coming home from work and turn the corner onto my block, took 2 steps and got sprayed by some teens with a garden hose.  I am not kidding.  They were hiding behind a set of stairs so I didn't see them.  I wasn't drenched, but I was definitely wet enough to let out serious of expletives.  Where did they even get a garden hose from?  I love NYC but it's stuff like this that sometimes makes me want to move.  Ugh, so annoying!  Sorry, I just needed to vent!

What did you all do to celebrate National Running Day?

I'm alive - just a slacker!

Sorry for the break in posts! Between the 2 half's back to back and Thanksgiving, I got thrown off and then since last week I've had such a bad cold I can't bring myself to blog after work.  Hopefully I will be kicking the cold soon and will be back to blogging normally!  I am hoping to at least get a Two for Tuesday up later tonight.

Hope everyone is well and had a great Thanksgiving!

Let's try this again...

So, it has clearly been close to 2 years since I've actually blogged.  Going to try this again.  Blog will basically be about the same things: running, racing, traveling, life in the city and food (I love food).  Also included will be things I've made or created from Pinterest - my new favorite site (seriously, I'm obsessed).  I've been making a lot of the recipes lately, so excited to share those!

I will try to post at least once a week if not more, but no promises!

More to come,
S

So its been a while....

Yea, so I'm a bad blogger. And apparently people actually read this (I'm serious - who knew?). And I'm sorry to the people who I told I would update this a while ago. Clearly, I did not. Oops. So to make up for that, this will be a longer then usual post (I'll try to re-cap what I can from the last 2 weeks).

The official pictures from the Philly Tri are up! Check them out at the link below:

http://www.asiorders.com/view_event.asp?EVENTID=32064

My bib number was 629. There are some pictures that are not me (not sure how they ended up in there), but the rest look pretty good.

I did my first long ride over the GW Bridge on the 28th. Meet the team in the park and then headed up. We rode over the bridge and along 9W to Piermont and back. Did a total of 48 miles, my longest ride to date. I felt good during the ride, but I am sooo not a fan of riding over the GW. I've run over it before and was fine with that, but riding over it was whole different experience. I kept having visions of me falling of the bridge. But, I took it slow and made it out and back. And hopefully the next time I do it, it won't be so terrifying.

That Sunday (6/29), I did a long run with the team, which went well despite it being ungodly hot out. I also went for a short, easy swim.

Monday's are rapidly becoming one of my favorite days of the week since they tend to be recovery days. I did some stretching and used the foam roller (I am still pretty inflexible/tight despite all my efforts).

Tuesday was our speed workout. We did a tempo run that mimicked the course of the NYC Triathlon (which is next weekend). I'm not doing the tri this year because of a family wedding, but it is good practice since I am planning on doing it next year.

The rest of the week I did strength training, 2 rides, a brick, and lots of swimming. I felt like I was becoming a fish by the end of the week. I also did a long-ish run on Sunday morning. As it was the 4th, I was able to be lazy and catch up on my sleep (well, some of the days I did). Monday (7/7) was another recovery day.

This week has been a lower volume week, but the intensity has definitely been higher. Tuesday night I did a 30-minute time trial. Wednesday I did a strength workout. Thursday morning I did a ride in the park. I had a really good ride - felt really comfortable and strong on the bike. I can finally feel the strength workout paying off - Harlem Hill was easier to do then usual.

Today I am doing a time trial in the pool, tomorrow one on the bike and Sunday another running time trial.
