I was really pleased with my Hollywood Tower Hotel bellhop costume.  It turned out really cute!  I ended up not wearing the hat - I just couldn't figure out how to get it to stay on my head.  But even without the hat, I really liked it!  It was wicking, so it was functional as well.  I got lots of complements on it!

I even managed (peripherally) to make the runDisney Facebook race photo album!  That's me right behind Thor!  He had quite an intense costume, full pants and sleeves in all.  He even ran the entire thing with that hammer - not sure how he did that.

Race TBT: Wine and Dine Half Marathon Relay 2010

Thanks to TimeHop (my new favorite app!), I was reminded that 4 years ago today, I ran the Inaugural Wine and Dine Half Marathon Weekend.  Kasey and I ran the relay (no longer offered, sadness).

This was just the kick in the butt I needed to get a new series of posts started.  There was a long period on this blog where I wasn't actually blogging, but was running lots of races.  I've been wanting for a while to do a series where I share my memories/stories/whatever I can remember from those races.  I'm really doing this because I want to remember these races in the future, but hopefully you'll enjoy these trips down memory lane as well!

Since my first Wine and Dine was 4 years ago today (and I'll be in Disney this weekend for Tower of Terror), I thought it was appropriate to start with this race.  The first year it was held at the beginning of the Festival but was moved to the end when they added the Tower of Terror 10M.

As I mentioned, this was the inaugural race and while it was fun, I do remember there being some kinks!  It was actually Kasey's idea to run this race and we decided to do the relay.  I remember you had to have a team name.  In honor of the theme of the race, we named our team Wine-O and Dine-O (which is how I have my Wine-O shirt).

The race started at ESPN Zone (as it does now).  I remember us having to wait forever for a bus to the start, which was very annoying.  By the time we got there, we had to split almost immediately so Kasey could head to the transition point (I was running the first leg).  I don't remember the specific split of mileage, but it was something along 5 and 8.

Since I was running the shorter leg, I had decided to run with my camera to take pictures (this was before the time of decent camera phones).  I think this is where my obsessions with race photo's began =).

The race start was similar to any Disney race and Chef Mickey and Minnie are on site to send us off!  I happen to love those costumes, so it made me happy to see them!

The course (as much as I can remember) is the same for the first part.  I do know they changed the second half as I remember Kasey finished ride outside Epcot at Friendship Gate and it was a total sh*t show (not enough space for all the people).  They have since changed it to how it is now.

There were several of characters out on the course and I enjoyed stopping for them all!  I also got (what is now a traditionally photo) right outside the gates of Animal Kingdom.  Must remember to get the same one this year!

Fancy Chip and Dale
The ladies from Fantasia
Traditional photo!
I do remember thinking (as I still do now) how cool it was to run through Animal Kingdom at night!  The transition for the relay was in the Animal Kingdom parking lot.  They had the relayer's go to one side and the halfer's to another (we had different color bibs).  Someone was calling out numbers as you headed in and your partner met you.  They were organized by bib number as well.  I vaguely remember having to switch a bracelet or something as the relay "baton", but can't remember exactly.

I do remember Kasey telling me a funny story from while she was waiting.  There was a women in her section of bibs that insisted on being right at the front of the waiting area because "her friend is super fast and she'll be one of the first to come through".  Kasey said she kept repeating this any time anyone someone tried to move to the front.

I obviously didn't know this, but Kasey said she almost burst out laughing when I was one of the first people to come through and she got to move past the girl to switch with me.  I believe she told me she said something to the girl along the lines of "there's my friend before yours".  We are so mature.  I wasn't racing it or anything, but I thought it was funny.  I wonder how long she waited?

This is the part I remember not going so well.  After finishing, I picked up my medal, bag and snack box and headed to a bus to go back to Epcot to the after party.  But no one seemed to have planned it properly and the buses where trapped in between runners heading into Animal Kingdom and runners heading out of Animal Kingdom.  We were on a bus, but had to wait at least 30 minutes before we could move.  It was really annoying!

Eventually, we got going and made it to Epcot.  We got dropped off behind the scenes at American Adventure and got to see a little of the backstage area before heading into World Showcase.  This was the first year and they didn't have any of the rides open, just the Food and Wine booths (they have definitely made this better in recent years!).

Kasey and I had made a plan to meet in front of Italy (Kasey had a bunch of other friends running as well) so I waited for her in the vicinity tasting some food and enjoying a few drinks =)  Not a bad way to kill some time!

I also snagged a picture with Gepetto!

After regrouping with Kasey, we took our celebratory photo and one with the group!  Then it was on to enjoy the rest of the after party!

Team Wine-O and Dine-O
The whole gang of runners!

There were definitely some kinks in this first race and after year 2, they nixed the relay (which was kinda sad because it was fun) but they've definitely made improvements as it has gone on.  I can't wait to do it in a few weeks for the 5th Anniversary!

Anyone else do the Inaugural Wine and Dine?

Celebrating the next day at the Food & Wine Festival!

Tower of Terror Costume Reveal!

As I mentioned Monday, I put my Tower of Terror costume together this weekend.  Per my decree after my Donald costume, I really don't want to go too intense on costumes (anymore).

This costume was pretty simple.  I've known for a long while that I wanted run this one as a Hollywood Tower Hotel employee (aka a Tower of Terror employee).  I know they sell cotton t-shirt versions, but had no desire to run it in cotton since historically it's always hot this race weekend.

I knew I could make a version of it myself!  I started with a maroon tech tee.  I found a New Balance one online that was the perfect color and only $8 bucks.  I had a Hollywood Tower Hotel logo iron on made for me by Miranda at DesignsbyMKC on Etsy.  She had created my iron on for my Anna costume as well.  She didn't have a HTH logo in the shop, but she was able to make one for me.  She was a joy to work with - easy to order and she shipped super quickly!  I highly recommend her if you need an iron-on made!

The iron-on was easy to apply and then from there, the rest came together quickly.  I added gold stripes to the sleeves and black/gold stripes to the shoulders using ribbon with fabric adhesive tape.

Whole thing took me about 30 minutes to make and I am really pleased with how it came out!  I'll be pairing it with a hat Abby had made last year as part of her costume and a black skirt - either a Sparkle Athletic one or plain black running skirt.  I'd prefer a Sparkle Athletic skirt, but I know they don't bring all the colors to the expo's and I forgot to pre-order for expo pickup.  Oh well, it is what it is!

What is everyone else dressing up as?

I mentioned last week that I had joined Oiselle's The Flock and my race singlet came this past week!  It also came with one of Oiselle's Spike drawstring bags.  While I am really excited to race in it, I won't be wearing it for Tower of Terror - the draw of a costume at runDisney races is too much!  I do have an Oiselle tattoo to wear for the race.  But I will be wearing it for Baltimore!

I just started reading Outlander (I know, I am seriously behind!).  I've only just started it, but so far I'm a big fan.  It's a huge book (close to 800 pages on my iPad) and just book 1 of a series... so basically I've got a lot of reading to do.  Anyone else read it?

Training recap week of 9/22 (Tower of Terror Week 4)

Happy Tower of Terror race week!  I am starting to get excited for the race - it's been busy at work so the time has gone quickly!  I did my costume this weekend (something simple, I'll share later this week!) and am already thinking about what I will be eating at the Food and Wine Festival.

I got some solid training in this week, but did skip my Sunday run.  I spent 5+ hours on Saturday helping a friend move (lets just day there were lots and lots of stairs and heavy lifting involved) and was a bit sore on Sunday.  Since I figured I got a good amount of cross training in from the move.

2 on Tuesday

I've talked about Oiselle before (you might remember they were included in my Christmas list last year).  It's a great women's focused company that really cares about women running.  They support some amazing pro's - Kara Goucher and Lauren Fleshman (remember when I met her at the Eugene Expo?).  They've recently started a team called The Flock.  I am excited to share that I am now a member of The Flock (this is what you might have seen on Instagram and I teased yesterday).  Being part of a team is one of my favorite parts of Team in Training, so naturally I am thrilled to be part of this team for an amazing company I respect.  I can't wait to start meeting all the other teammates.  My race singlet is on it's way and I can't wait to wear it!

It's my favorite time of the year - Fall TV time!  I am excited for my returning favorites to start again (speaking of returning favorites, anyone watch The Mindy Project?  Umm, Diamond Dan. Yes, please.) and new shows to become addicted too.  One of the shows I've been looking forward to premiered last night - Gotham.  Let's start with the fact that it stars Ben McKenzie (I've had a crush on him since The O.C. and I'm not afraid to admit it).  I've also shared my (nerd) love of superhero movies before, so the fact that I want to watch a prequel set in the Batman world shouldn't surprise anyone.  I have to say the first episode did not disappoint.  I thought it was a great first episode and I am excited to see where the season will go.

Book Club Friday: Reconstructing Amelia

It's Friday which means it's time for another Book Club Friday!  This week I'm sharing Reconstructing Amelia by Kimberly McCreight.  My friend Tess recommended it and I trust her recommendations so

Synopsis (from goodreads.com):
A stunning debut novel in which a single mother reconstructs her teenaged daughter's life, sifting through her emails, texts, and social media to piece together the shocking truth about the last days of her life.

Litigation lawyer and harried single mother Kate Baron is stunned when her daughter's exclusive private school in Park Slope, Brooklyn, calls with disturbing news: her intelligent, high-achieving fifteen-year-old daughter, Amelia, has been caught cheating.

Kate can't believe that Amelia, an ambitious, levelheaded girl who's never been in trouble would do something like that. But by the time she arrives at Grace Hall, Kate's faced with far more devastating news. Amelia is dead.

Seemingly unable to cope with what she'd done, a despondent Amelia has jumped from the school's roof in an act of "spontaneous" suicide. At least that's the story Grace Hall and the police tell Kate. And overwhelmed as she is by her own guilt and shattered by grief, it is the story that Kate believes until she gets the anonymous text:

She didn't jump.

Sifting through Amelia's emails, text messages, social media postings, and cell phone logs, Kate is determined to learn the heartbreaking truth about why Amelia was on Grace Hall's roof that day-and why she died.

Told in alternating voices, Reconstructing Amelia is a story of secrets and lies, of love and betrayal, of trusted friends and vicious bullies. It's about how well a parent ever really knows a child and how far one mother will go to vindicate the memory of a daughter whose life she could not save.

My thoughts:
My friend Tess recommended it and she's usually spot on with her books.  I have to admit though, it took a long time for me to get into the book.  I actually debated stopping at one point, but I wanted to see it through.  Once it going though, I couldn't put it down.  The book was well written and the ending actually surprised me.  I won't go to much into it as not to spoil it, but I recommend giving it a read.

New Balance Girls Night Out

Last Wednesday was another of the New Balance Girls Night Out events.  They started doing these earlier this summer, but this is the first one I got to attend!  Yay!

Upon arriving, I checked in and had to choose which activity I wanted to participate in.  The choice this Wednesday was a class with CityRow or a group run.  I wanted to take the rowing class, but also needed to get my run in.  I ended up doing the run, but have plans to take a class at CityRow.  Both Pam and Abby did the CityRow workout and really liked it.

Prior to the start, you had the option to try on some of New Balance's sneakers and use them for your workout.  I decided to try the new Fresh Foam sneakers.

They were pretty comfortable, but I don't think I would wear them for running.  They have minimum cushioning and I really like a lot of cushioning.  I am sure there are people out there who would love these - especially if you like minimal cushioning.

Once everyone was registered and bags were checked, they split the group into rowing and running.  Those doing rowing left first, then the runners headed out.  Our course took us up 5th Ave and then across to the Highline.  I don't think you are supposed to run on the Highline, but it wasn't too crowded so it wasn't bad.  It was pretty cool to run on the Highline as the sun was setting!

After the run, they had a nice post workout party at the New Balance store.  They had some food set up (apps, sandwiches, cookies) and cocktails (yummy!).

Bliss Spa was also onsite and they were offering foot massages and stretching.  I opted for a foot massage and it was sooo nice.  Made me want an actual massage - it's been a while since I've had one.

We also got a nice goody bag upon leaving which was filled with some Bliss goodies (face mask, body lotion) as well as a pass for a free class at CityRow.  Sweet!

New Balance is hosting these in several cities and are coming back to NYC in October (and they are free!).  Hopefully my schedule will allow me to attend again!

{Side note: I registered on my own to attend (it's free for all guests) and was not invited by New Balance or asked to write this post.  Even so, all opinions are my own.}
